The Consul's File

A young American diplomat is sent to a "bachelor post" in Ayer Hitam, a place where civilization meets the jungle. He records a sequence of tales in which he is both observer and participant.

He meets both Asians and exiles struggling for adjustment, errant wives, free-loading travelers, a former lover - and from it all, creates a sensual evocation of character and place, comic at times, bizarre at others, but always fascinating.
